For most of us, Christmas, whether we like it or not, is about me or us. But we all know what Christmas is supposed to be about don’t we?
It’s the time of year we remember the birth of the Baby Jesus. Churches around the world will be lighting candles to remind the congregations to prepare their hearts and minds for the coming Christ child...but we don’t need to wait for the baby! Every day is an opportunity to prepare our hearts because Jesus isn’t coming, He’s already here! God gave us His Holy Spirit so every day is the first day of advent. We don’t need to seek his Kingdom, it’s already here and we’re living in it. All we have to do is open our eyes and our hearts to see past the images of the baby in the manger to the risen Jesus, who wants us to demonstrate the love that he has for the world. He want us each one of us to be ‘advent candles’, little beacons of light in a dark world. Beacons of compassion, forgiveness and generosity not just at Christmas but all year round.
